The Plasma Pen is such a new treatment that we are just getting the technology in our practice. It is a skin tightening procedure that can also reduce the appearance of acne scars or wrinkles. This is different from other nonsurgical skin tightening procedures because it is slightly more invasive and more effective. Here is what you need to know about this new treatment.

What is it? How does it work?

The plasma pen is the latest in skin tightening technology. Several nonsurgical skin tightening treatments use the body’s healing process to their advantage. By causing small wounds just below the surface of the skin, collagen and elastin production are stimulated, resulting in the tightening and filling in of wrinkles.

In this treatment, plasma is delivered in an arc suspended in the pen just above the surface of the skin to cause tiny holes in the skin. The plasma pen is much more effective than microneedling and other techniques because it is able to penetrate deeper into the skin’s layers.  The pen is completely safe for most people.

How does the plasma pen differ from other skin tightening treatments?

There are a lot of skin tightening treatments that stimulate the skin’s collagen and elastin during the healing process, microneedling being the most widely known. What makes it different? Microneedling and similar therapies might produce results, but these technologies aren’t going to give the same results. The arc of energy causes thermal disruption, destroying fibroblasts (collagen and protein cells) so that the skin begins rejuvenation.
