Chemical peels are a popular treatment used to improve the tone and texture of the skin, as well as reduce signs of aging. With several different chemical peels available, you can find one that addresses your specific cosmetic goals.

During a peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin. This causes the outer surface of the skin to peel and flake off, which removes the damaged skin cells causing visible scarring, pigmentation, age spots, and even wrinkles. This process allows new, healthy skin cells to rise to the surface and improves the appearance of the skin’s complexion.

While chemical peels are effective at improving the look of the skin, it’s important to prepare your skin to avoid irritation. You can prep your skin for a chemical peel by:

Avoiding Exfoliation.

Chemical peels are powerful exfoliating treatments. So, exfoliating the week before a peel could irritate or damage the skin. Because of this, be sure to steer clear of any exfoliating products for at least a week before your chemical peel for the best results

Stopping the Use of Retinol and Topical Acne Treatments.

Retinol and acne treatments, in combination with a chemical peel, can dry out and irritate the skin. So, about a week before undergoing a chemical peel, stop using these topical skincare products.

Limit Sun Exposure.

UV rays from the sun can damage your skin before a chemical peel, causing redness and inflammation. So, stay out of the sun as much as possible in the week leading up to your chemical peel. If you do need to go out in the sun, make sure to apply a high SPF sunscreen beforehand.

Hydrate and Moisturize

Ensuring that your skin is moisturized by drinking plenty of water and applying a moisturizing product often will provide the best results from a chemical peel. Especially in the days before your chemical peel, focus on hydration and avoid products that could dry out your skin.
