Fat transfer and dermal fillers are both aesthetic treatments that can be used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. While both are used for wrinkles and lost volume in the skin, these treatments are used in different cases. Here, we’ll outline the treatment processes of fat transfer and dermal fillers, as well as the differences between both procedures.

Fat Transfer

The fat transfer procedure involves taking fat from one area of the body, then injecting it into areas of skin that have lost volume due to aging. The fat is generally harvested from the thighs, abdomen, or torso, then cleaned, processed, and micronized to supply up to 50 ccs of graftable fat.

Each cc of fat is then re-injected into the areas of volume loss. This treatment process may take 2 to 3 hours and is performed with local anesthesia.

Fat transfer is used when dermal fillers aren’t well tolerated by certain individuals or someone looking for a longer-lasting option. This treatment has powerful volumizing effects on the face and hands.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, and lost volume in the skin. There are many different options of dermal fillers, with each one targeting different areas of the face, as well as the hands and neck. For example, Restylane Lyft is a dermal filler that is designed to provide volume to the cheeks, midface, and the back of the hands, while RHA 2 is formulated for superficial to moderate wrinkles and thinning lips.

Hyaluronic acid is the main ingredient in many dermal fillers. This substance occurs naturally in the skin, providing hydration and plumpness for smooth skin. By restoring hyaluronic acid in areas of the skin with volume loss, dermal fillers can rejuvenate your appearance. However, in severe cases of volume loss, dermal fillers may not be sufficient, making the fat transfer a superior option.
